Penguin Update

Penguins Are Wreaking Havoc - Penguin Update

Google’s latest update has a lot of people freaking out… Initially, I was myself. Everything has been turned upside down by the Penguin update.

We all know they like to change how they rank websites on a regular basis in order to make sure that people aren’t “gaming the system”.Penguin update

Their most recent update was a big one and went by the name of Penguin. Most penguins are cute and don’t turn things on their heads. This one is different.

After reading articles and watching webinars about the Penguin update, here are my main take aways on how to get / keep on the top of the search results.

-Keywords are dead…well sorta. Gone are the days of over-using key search phrases all over your website. It’s more important than ever to write for your website visitor and not the search engines.

-Use Latent Semantic Indexing keywords (or LSI). These are secondary phrases that are close to your main phrases. We all like variety in our life and so does Google.

-Tones of incoming backlinks using the same anchor text over and over are bad. Sites with 60%+ of all the links using the same anchor text have been hit hard.

The solution?

Vary the words in your anchor text links for multiple phrases and even use some that have nothing to do with your site, like “click here” or “contact us for a quote”

-Getting links from relevant sites in your industry are also more important then before.  Write guest blog posts on related sites if possible.

-Social links and sharing are good. Write good content that people want to +1, retweet or post.

It seems funny, but I think the less you know about SEO, the better off you are.

What are your thoughts on the Penguin update? Have you seen an increase or drop in your rankings?

I have always believed that fresh content is the best and that by adding content and not worrying to much about keywords eventually the message will get out and the search engines will be friendly.

That being said I have found that if you want to penetrate focus on a region 1st and move outwards.  For example ByzBlog should probably focus on Vancouver Internet Marketing Tips instead of just Internet Marketing tips.  Do you agree?

Thanks Pete! Ignorance is indeed bliss ;)

I totally agree Owen about taking things more local with your marketing and I see that you’ve made the change. Good on you. Actually, many large national level corporations are now starting to build locally targeted websites. They must be doing it for a reason.

    Nice breakdown post.

It’s always been good SEO practice to diversify your inbound links and Penguin just made it a little more important to do so.  Another update to force SEO Internet Marketers to stay on top of their game. You’re right, it’s almost like ignorance is bliss when it comes to SEO.  Thing is; Google tends to reward hard work.  If you’re not really thinking about SEO and are very active, diverse and relevant with your link building. Google will view this activity as “natural”.
