6 Graphic Design Tips To Help You

Almost any business out there must have a designer or a design team.  This team ensures any branding matters concerning promotion and e-presence are handled in a professional manner. In reality though, there are many business owners at the start up stage exhausted with business operating expenses that are trying to save on design and marketing and do it themselves. Therefore, I decided to share some essential graphic design tips on designing a print newsletter, announcement or a simple flyer to ensure that the professional image of your business is maintained.

  1. When in doubt use Helvetica or Helvetica Neue. Helvetica is professional, presentable and well designed typeface.
  2. Limit use of color. Unless professionally designed, the text in various colors may cause psychedelic associations and is very hard to read.
  3. Avoid using small resolution images. No image is better than a bad image.
  4. Use a couple of font sizes. For example, your call to action can come in a big bold font and your regular text can be much smaller. If you are designing an announcement message, which has to be seen at distance – enlarge the text to serve the purpose.
  5. Never use central positioning of your text! Central positioning is possible in some cases but has to be identified by the professional designer. Stick to the flash left positioning. (Left to right)
  6. Take advantage of white (empty) space. It allows your customers’ eyes to rest and concentrate on important information.

Are You Touching Your Clients In The RIGHT SPOTS?

“Your brand is just your company seen through the eyes of others” -  the quote by Arlene Dickinson nicely alludes to today’s topic. Are you in charge how your company is perceived through the eyes of others? Do you want to gain control, engagement and brand awareness through touching your clients in the right spots – using brand touchpoints?

Brand touchpoints are any pieces of media, collateral or marketing that creates any type of contact with your existing or potential clients. Some touchpoints are obvious such as marketing brochure, promotional coupons or a website. The subtler touchpoints include product manual, post sales support or a survey.

In the illustration below you will notice that brand touchpoints generally divide into pre-puchase, purchase and post-purchase categories. Each area offers various ways how to engage your client and tell your brand story to encourage the sale and ongoing relationship. Continue Reading

1. Don’t advertise for the sake of advertising.

Before you say Yes, ask yourself – and the publication these Qs:

(a) Is this going to have impact?

(b) Who reads this publication anyway? (Every publication should have stats to share)

(c) Is my message relevant in this medium?

2. Your logo doesn’t need to be so honkin’ huge. Continue Reading
